How One Caregiver and Family Built Important Bonds
When Nancy’s mother became ill at the age of 94, she and her family were taken by surprise, but always knew their mother would be happiest in the comfort of her own home. This led Nancy to consider in-home care for her mother and ultimately deciding to put their trust in Right at Home caregiver Salamatu Obadiah, who cared for Nancy’s mother until her passing a few years ago.
“My mother was 94 and facing a number of different issues as her health declined. She had such discomfort interacting with many people including most doctors and nurses, but she loved Salamatu,” Nancy said said. “Salamatu was with my mother during the night shift and she was so wise, calm and helpful. Her presence brought my mother and I to peace during such a difficult time.”
A couple years following her mother’s death, Nancy’s husband fell and endured a traumatic brain injury. Having had such a positive experience with Obadiah a couple of years prior, Nancy quickly turned to Obadiah for assistance to help her husband recover.
“I didn’t know what I was going to do for my husband, so I brought him home and arranged care for him around the clock with Salamatu. She did a wonderful job caring for my husband and my family truly enjoyed having her presence around,” Nancy said.
Building a Career Caring for Others
Before beginning her career with Right at Home, Obadiah cared for her family back in Africa while she worked in agriculture. After moving to North Carolina, she always knew that she wanted to be a nurse, so she took steps toward becoming a CNA at the Carolina Allied Health Training Center, allowing her to pursue a career that centered around taking care of others.
“I grew up caring for family members and one day, I’ll need help, too, so I wanted to give back,” said Obadiah. “Through Right at Home, I get to provide a better quality of life to my clients.”
Over the four years that she’s been with Right at Home, Obadiah has worked with a variety of clients with varying needs, proving herself as a versatile and respected caregiver in The Triangle, but she credits Right at Home’s flexibility and support for her growth as a caregiver.
“Right at Home has the staff’s best interest at heart and tries their best to give an equal distribution of hours,” said Obadiah. “The flexibility is really what differentiates Right at Home from others. They always listen to their employees.”
